Digital radio
report

Q4 2014

Nowhere to go but up[stream]

With a steady flow of new digital radio stations entering the marketplace and existing stations upgrading their service features and offerings, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that 2014 was an incredible year for streaming. Digital radio provides an alternative to the constant rotation of the “same ol’ songs” that FM radio listeners have grown accustomed to and, frankly, tired of hearing. More and more, music fans are looking for ways to discover new music, engage with other music fans, and dare we say it: have the option to avoid unwelcomed interruptions to their listening (aka advertisements). Further, the explosive growth of mobile devices is increasing the demand for on-the-go listening. The new demands of music consumers create only one direction for streaming:UP.

The SoundExchange effect

Over the past decade, SoundExchange has experienced a steady increase in growth year-after-year. In the past two years alone, we’ve paid out nearly $1.4 billion dollars to recording artists and labels. This tremendous growth suggests that digital radio has become the fastest-growing segment of music consumption.

Drake Was Digital Radio's Most Streamed Artist in 2014

"Drake makes hits and *fire emoji* songs. We all know this. He indirectly put out the best rap album this year, and at this point, it's impossible to listen to the radio without hearing
Drake at least once". (Source: Complex )

SoundExchange is the independent non-profit organization created for the digital age. SoundExchange ensures that recording artists and recording companies are compensated when their work is streamed by non-interactive digital radio.

SoundExchange royalties are paid by more than 2,500 non-interactive Internet radio, satellite radio and cable radio services for their use of sound recordings. These royalties are distributed by SoundExchange directly to the recording artists and record labels that earn them.
